The primary education emphasis is for students who wish to teach in public school classrooms with kindergarten through third grade, as well as early childhood education programs for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
The Primary Education emphasis completes requirements for the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB).

The Early Childhood Education BS with an emphasis in Primary Education requires a minimum of 80.5 credits within the major.
At least 34 upper-division (3xxx-level or higher) credits in the major must be completed through University of Minnesota Crookston.

The program management emphasis is for students who wish to increase their academic preparation for supervisory, management, and/or leadership roles in child care and education programs.
Graduates with primary education emphasis demonstrate competencies as described by the Professional Educator Licensing Board (PELSB), Rules 8710.3000, Standards for Teachers of Early Childhood Education (ECE), and in PELSB Rules 8710.2000, Standards for Effective Practice for all Teachers.

At least 29 upper-division (3xxx-level or higher) credits in the major must be completed through University of Minnesota Crookston.
